Easy guava and cheese pastries

Guava cheese pastries

Nothing, and I mean nothing, beats a Cuban pastry. If you live in, or have visited Miami, you can find a Cuban bakery or coffee stand on nearly every corner. Whether filled with meat, guava, and/or cheese, pastelitos are great for breakfast, lunch, dinner and all the snacks in between.

Traditionally, pastelitos are made with puff pastry sheets which you can purchase in the freezer section of your grocery store. I didn’t have any on hand but I did have crescent rolls in the fridge. Since we do not have Cuban bakeries on every corner in Indiana and because my daughter and I were craving pastelitos, I decided to make this cheater version. Not only are they fantastic, they are ridiculously simple to make.

Ingredients
  1. A block of guava paste
  2. A block of cream cheese
  3. 2 cans of flaky crescent rolls
  4. melted butter for brushing
  5. sugar for sprinkling
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Unroll the crescents and separate the triangles.
  3. At the widest end, place a slice of guava paste and a *pat* of cream cheese(similar to a pat of butter).
  4. Roll up the crescents and form a ball, ensuring there are no open ends and place on your baking tray. I line mine with foil paper and spray with a cooking spray but this is not necessary.
  5. Brush the crescent balls with melted butter and sprinkle a generous amount of sugar over all of them.
  6. Place tray in oven and bake at 375 for 11-13 minutes.
  7. When done, place on a cooling rack to cool off.
  8. Best eaten when warm. Enjoy!
